• Only together, we will achieve the

    MSC certification for mahi mahi

What is the MSC certification?

The MSC certification (Marine Stewardship Council) is a sustainability standard that certifies that a fishery is developed under international fishing sustainability criteria. The assessment criteria are based on three core principles:

P1

Sustainable fish stocks

ishing must be at a level that ensures it can continue indefinitely and the fish population can remain productive and healthy.

P2

Minimizing environmental impact

Fishing activity must be managed carefully so that other species and habitats within the ecosystem remain healthy.

P3

Effective fisheries management

MSC certified fisheries must comply with relevant laws and be able to adapt to changing environmental circumstances.

BENEFITS

It is a tool to strengthen fisheries management in order to reverse the global decline of fish stocks.

It can open new international markets that demand products from sustainable sources.

Fomenta la transparencia en el manejo pesquero y participación de todos los actores de la cadena en la toma de decisiones.

STEPS FOR CERTIFICATION

To achieve MSC certification, the following steps must be followed:

Pre-assessment of the fishery against the MSC standard: Gap analysis

Develop a FIP: An Action Plan to Improve Low Performance Indicators

Implement the FIP Action Plan 100% by 2023. Complete assessment to achieve MSC certification.

In the case of the Peruvian mahi mahi fishery, we are in the third step, where we have been implementing a Fishery Improvement Project (FIP)

WHAT IS A FIP?

It is a Fisheries Improvement Project; also known as PROME or FIP. In this project, an action plan or roadmap is developed with aspects that must be improved in order to achieve sustainability based on the three MSC principles. This requires a multi-stakeholder approach (i.e.: fishermen, academia, private sector, State) to address the environmental challenges of a fishery.

PLANIFICADA

WHAT DOES THE MAHI MAHI FISHERY NEED TO BE CERTIFIED?

1

Strengthen scientific research on distribution, existence and migratory patterns of different subpopulation units of mahi mahi.

2

Improve monitoring and data collection through electronic fishing logs, on-board human observers and/or electronic monitoring systems.

3

Strengthen monitoring, control and surveillance of fishing activity.

4

Coordinate the application and monitoring of the level of compliance with the regulations, as well as periodically evaluate its effectiveness.

5

Reduce sea turtle bycatch and monitor the interaction of the fishery with other non-target species.

6

Bolster the regulatory framework, as well as the transparent and participatory governance of the fishery.

7-verde

Establish a binational management agreement between the two main mahi mahi producers in the Southeast Pacific: Peru and Ecuador; considering complementary management measures, as well as monitoring strategies and scientific evaluations of the fishery.

8-verde

Reduce IUU fishing by strengthening traceability across the value chain – from catch to final sale to the public.

Note 1: The PMA work plans cover the 8 identified needs that must be worked on to achieve the mahi mahi certification.

Note 2: Advancing in these aspects will not only help us achieve MSC certification, but also help us with the ratings of Monterrey Bay Aquarium SeaFood Watch.
